Hoenn walkthrough

This page takes you through the Hoenn story in order, with every gym, rival battle and puzzle route. Your family moves to Littleroot Town and you pick a Hoenn starter from Professor Birch. Team Magma’s plan to wake Groudon then carries you across the whole region, from Rustboro’s Devon Corporation to the depths of the Cave of Origin.

Littleroot TownYour family's new home in Hoenn.

Hoenn is the third region of the story. Team Aqua is around too, but in PBO Team Magma is the main villain. PBO’s Hoenn story follows the original games closely, with its own twists: gyms with new teams, a Mega Bracelet from Steven, a Magma Suit to face Groudon, and a post-game chain that leads to Kanto.

If you are lost, open the Quest Tracker: as in Jvaloh, it always shows the next story step, and this walkthrough follows its order.

You can start once the Jvaloh story is finished. After you defeat Rayquaza at the top of the Dragon Tower, leave the tower and talk to Horus on Goldburn City Shores.

He has visited your mother, and the quest Reunion with Mom begins. See the Jvaloh walkthrough.

Region Changer Reda in Professor Birch’s Laboratory makes up to 5 party Pokémon count as caught in Hoenn, so the cap stops applying to them. As in Jvaloh, he only converts Pokémon at or below level 5, plus 10 per Hoenn badge.

Field skills in Hoenn follow the Hoenn badges. Until your fifth badge you cannot surf in Hoenn at all. See why you never teach HMs in the FAQ.

Rock Smash 3

Surf 5

Hoenn’s teleporter destinations unlock as you earn badges (Slateport City after the Oceanic Museum scene). Most trips cost 100 F; Oldale Town costs 50 F. Mr. Briney’s boat links Route 104, Dewford Town and Route 109 for 1 F.

Every Hoenn teleporter can also take you to Spring Valley in Sinnoh or the Crew Wars Lobby, where a teleporter serves every region; see Travelling between regions.

Where to go: Twinleaf Town, the docks of Snowpoint City, Crosswave Isle and Littleroot Town.

  1. Twinleaf Town. Go home. Your mom is amazed that you met Horus, explains that the family is moving to Littleroot Town to be with your dad, and gives you the Hoenn Ship Pass.

  2. Snowpoint City. Teleport to Snowpoint and talk to Sailor Bucky at the docks on the south side of the city. His ship takes you to Crosswave Isle.

Sailor Bucky waits at the Snowpoint City docks with the ship to Crosswave Isle.
  3. The moving truck. On Crosswave Isle, talk to Driver Rusty to climb into Randy’s truck, then talk to Randy to arrive in Littleroot Town. Driver Rusty also stands in Littleroot and drives you back to Crosswave Isle, where Sailor Bucky sails to Snowpoint, whenever you want to return to Sinnoh.

  4. Mom in Littleroot. Your mom is in your new house. She asks you to introduce yourself to Professor Birch.

  1. Route 128. Surf south from Mossdeep through Route 127 to Route 128 and dive on the dark water to reach Route 128 (Underwater). The entrance to the Seafloor Cavern is on the seafloor.

  2. Through the cavern. You need Rock Smash and Strength for the rocks and boulders. From the entrance room, take this way through the numbered rooms:

    • Room 1: the exit on the east side.
    • Room 2: the exit in the lower right.
    • Room 3: the exit at the bottom.
    • Room 5: the exit in the top left.
    • Room 7: the exit at the top.
    • Room 8: push the boulders aside and take the exit at the top into the deepest room.
  3. Battle Maxie. Maxie and Archie are arguing in front of a sleeping Groudon. Beat Maxie; Groudon wakes, reverts to its Primal form and leaves.

  4. Back on Route 128. Leave the cavern the way you came, surface on Route 128 and meet Maxie, Archie and Steven there. The sky above Sootopolis is burning.

Next: dive on Route 126 to reach Sootopolis City.

Where to go: the underwater tunnel from Route 126 into Sootopolis City, the Cave of Origin down to B4F, and the Sootopolis Gym.

  1. Into Sootopolis. Dive on Route 126 and follow the underwater tunnel up into Sootopolis City. Heal, then go to the group by the Cave of Origin: Steven, Wallace, Maxie, Tabitha, Archie and May.

  2. The Magma Suit. Maxie entrusts you with the Magma Suit Bundle, made by Team Magma and the Devon Corporation to survive the heat near Groudon. Open the bundle in your bag and wear every piece: the Magma Suit Helmet, Battery, Top, Pants and Shoes (they are in the Customization tab). You cannot get close to Groudon without the full suit.

Open the Magma Suit Bundle and wear every piece before you approach Groudon.
  3. Cave of Origin. Go down to B4F and battle Primal Groudon (level 65). Its Desolate Land makes Water moves fail, so bring strong Ground moves instead (Groudon’s Fire typing takes them at double damage).

  4. Your friends. Leave the cave and talk to everyone outside, May last. The sky clears and Wallace goes back to his gym.

  5. Gym 8: Wallace. The floor is full of hidden holes; see Gym 8 below.

Sootopolis gym floor in the rain with a trainer standing in the first room
Sootopolis Gym: most floor tiles hide holes to the floor below.

Level: Wallace’s strongest Pokémon is level 68, so aim for about that level. Pokémon from Sinnoh or Jvaloh fight at level 40 at most here.

Bring: Electric and Grass moves; they work best. Swampert takes four times damage from Grass, but Azumarill’s Sap Sipper absorbs Grass moves. It rains permanently in this gym.

The floor is full of hidden holes: step on a wrong tile and you fall to a floor full of trainers below. The route is below.

Sootopolis Gym: the safe path past the holes

The gym has three puzzle rooms joined by short corridors, and most of their floor tiles are hidden holes. This is the shortest safe path, checked against the gym’s map files.

It matches the routes players shared on the forum. If you fall, take the stairs on the floor below back up to the entrance hall and start again.

  1. Entrance corridor. The corridor is two tiles wide. Walk straight north from the door in the left lane.
  2. First room. Go 2 north into the room, then 1 west, 2 north, 2 east, and continue north up the corridor in its right lane.
  3. Second room. The corridor ends in a spot two tiles wide. Step 1 west onto its left tile before you go on (the tile straight ahead is a hole), then 3 north, 1 west, 2 north, 2 east, and continue north up the next corridor in its right lane.
  4. Third room. As you step into the room, go 3 west, 2 north, 1 east, 2 north, 1 east, 2 north, 1 east, then walk north up the last corridor (right lane) to Wallace.

Counted as moves from the entrance door: 22 north, 1 west, 2 north, 2 east, 5 north, 1 west, 3 north, 1 west, 2 north, 2 east, 7 north, 3 west, 2 north, 1 east, 2 north, 1 east, 2 north, 1 east, 7 north.

Next: the Skies Beyond Hoenn quests start as soon as you are Champion.

As Champion you can sail on to Kanto, but first the sky has to calm down. This chain of story quests starts as soon as you are Champion.

  1. Mossdeep Space Center. Steven is on the second floor. Something is bleeding through the sky from Kanto, and Rayquaza is reacting.

  2. Sootopolis City. Wallace says Sky Pillar has sealed itself and the winds are pushing everyone back.

  3. Slateport City. At the port, Dockmaster Harren explains that the ship to Kanto could not sail because of the turbulence, and Steven confirms that Sky Pillar is the source.

  4. Route 131. Surf to Route 131. Wallace tests you in a level 91–96 battle before he opens the sealed entrance.

Hoenn has a lot of post-game content. Some highlights:

  • Mega Stones. May, Professor Cozmo and Wally each ask for help with a rampaging Mega starter (Blaziken, Sceptile, Swampert). See Hoenn starter Mega Stones. Steven helps you rebuild a Metagrossite (Metagrossite), and once you are Champion, Drake in the Ever Grande City Pokémon Center starts a series of dragon battles that ends with a Salamencite (Salamencite).
  • Legendaries. Sage Eron on Route 120 starts the Regi quest (Sage Eron and the Regis), and Professor Birch’s Eon Duo research gives you the Eon Flute (Eon Duo).
  • Weekly bosses. Maxie in the Cave of Origin, Cozmo, Wally, and the Hex Maniacs of Mt. Pyre (Hex Maniacs) offer high-level fights. See Bosses and high-level battles.
  • Daily trainers. The Winstrate family in their house on Route 111 battle you every day, and Vito joins them once you are Champion. See The Winstrate family.
  • Sablenite. Collect 100 Ethereal Wisps for the Ethereal Witch on Mt. Pyre’s summit. See Ethereal Wisps.
  • More side quests. See Hoenn side quests.
