EV training

EVs are the training points that push a stat beyond what level and IVs give it. You earn them by defeating wild Pokémon, and you can multiply them with the right held item.

New to EVs? Read Stats, IVs, EVs and natures first for the limits and how allocation works.

When you defeat a wild Pokémon, you earn its EV yield: a fixed number of points in one or more stats. A Golduck always gives 2 Sp. Atk; a Zubat always gives 1 Speed. Yields are shown on every Pokémon locations page.

Who gets the yield:

  • Every Pokémon of yours that took part in the battle and is still standing at the end gets the full yield. A Pokémon that fainted gets nothing.
  • The first Pokémon in your party holding an Exp. Share also gets the full yield, even if it never battled, as long as it has not fainted. Only the first holder in party order counts.
    • This works with the Exp. Share, the crafted Everstone, Move-Block and Macho Brace Exp Shares and the Soothe Share.
    • The Exp. Share (Untradable) from the early Sinnoh story shares experience but not EVs.
  • In a horde, you earn the yield of every Pokémon you defeat.

A Pokémon holds one item at a time, so pick the one that fits.

Item Effect on EVs Where to get it
Power items (one per stat, see below) +8 EVs in its stat for every wild Pokémon defeated, on top of the normal yield. Lowers the holder’s Speed in battle. Daycare Token Shop (200 Daycare Tokens each)
Macho Brace Doubles the wild Pokémon’s yield. Lowers the holder’s Speed in battle. Daycare Token Shop (300 Daycare Tokens) or Dynite Ore Shop (500 Dynite Ore)
Macho Brace Exp Share An Exp. Share that also doubles the yield its holder receives. Crafting, with a blueprint from the Daycare Token Shop
Exp. Share Lets a Pokémon earn EVs (and experience) without battling. Blaze Coin Shop (65 Blaze Coins) or Dynite Ore Shop (400 Dynite Ore)

Each stat has its own Power item:

Stat Power item
HP Power Weight
Attack Power Bracer
Defense Power Belt
Sp. Atk Power Lens
Sp. Def Power Band
Speed Power Anklet

A Power item’s bonus comes from the item, so it is the same whatever you defeat. A Pokémon holding a Power Lens earns 2 + 8 = 10 Sp. Atk from a Golduck, and 0 + 8 = 8 Sp. Atk even from a Bidoof (plus Bidoof’s 1 HP).

The Macho Brace only doubles the real yield, so 2 Sp. Atk becomes 4. For most training, Power items are much faster.

You earn Daycare Tokens at the Daycare and spend them in its Daycare Token Shop.

  1. Lead with the trainee. Put the Pokémon you are training in the first slot, holding the Power item for the stat you want.
  2. Add an Exp. Share. If you have a second Pokémon to train, give it an Exp. Share.
  3. Pick a spot. Go to a spot from the tables below, where most common encounters give the stat you want.
  4. Train to 252. Defeat wild Pokémon until the stat reaches 252. Then allocate any unallocated EVs on the EVs tab of its card.

The tables rank areas by how much of the chosen stat an average Common or Uncommon encounter gives, so rare spawns are ignored.

  • Common Pokémon that give it shows how many of the common encounters there yield that stat; 3 of 3 means every common encounter counts.
  • Spots that only work by day or by night are marked. PBO’s day and night follow server time (UTC); see Day and night.

These tables are generated from the game’s spawn data, so they update with the game.

  • Sinnoh’s best Sp. Atk spots need Surf: Psyduck and Golduck live on the water of the lakes and many routes.
  • Fishing in Mossdeep City (Hoenn) gives Defense at night (Poliwrath) and Sp. Def by day (Politoed).
  • Some spots mix in a Pokémon that gives a second stat. If you train there, use a Power item so the stat you want grows much faster than the other, or clean up afterwards with an EV berry.
