Pokémon chests

A Pokémon chest is an item that holds one Pokémon. Open it from your Bag and a wild battle with that Pokémon starts on the spot, so you can catch it like any other wild Pokémon.

This wild Eevee came out of a chest.

At a glance

• Open: from your Bag, outside of a battle
• Bring: a fully healed party and plenty of Poké Balls
• Used up: the moment the battle starts, whether you catch the Pokémon or not
• Can’t open: on a Crew Wars map, or in Kanto before you have completed the Kanto region
• Trading: most chests can be traded and sold in the Trade House

Chests are how you get many Pokémon that don’t appear in the wild: legendaries, starters from other regions, fossils and event forms.

Before you open one

1. Heal your party. Bring plenty of Poké Balls too. The chest is used up the moment the battle starts, whether you catch the Pokémon or not.
2. Pick a safe lead. Lead with a Pokémon that can weaken it safely, for example with False Swipe or a status move. Legendaries in chests can be tough.
3. Open the chest. Use it from your Bag, outside of a battle.

A chest won’t open if:

• none of your Pokémon can battle (you are also sent back to heal)
• you are on a Crew Wars map
• you are in Kanto and haven’t completed the Kanto region yet (“You cannot open Pokemon chests in Kanto region without completing the region”)
• you are already in a battle, or another chest battle is about to start

Mount chests and item chests are different

• A mount chest gives you a mount to ride, not a battle. Some mount chests can also give a shiny version of the mount. See mount chests.
• Item chests, such as the Bronze Blaze Chest and the event chests, give you items. Hover over one in your Bag (on a phone, touch and hold it) and its tooltip lists every prize it can give and how likely each one is.

Most chests can be traded and sold in the Trade House, so buying one from another player is often quicker than earning the currency yourself.

Chests you can buy

Every Pokémon chest that a shop or a monthly trader sells, with its price. Chests marked with months only appear in those months.

Other ways to get chests

Fossils (mining)

1. Dig up a fossil. Fossils come from mining.
2. Bring it to a Fossil Maniac. Fossil Maniac Garson is in the Fossil Maniac’s House on Route 114 (Hoenn), and Fossil Maniac Dorian is in the Oreburgh Mining Museum (Sinnoh).
3. Collect your chest. He turns the fossil into a Pokémon chest.

Mining itself can also reward a few chests directly, such as the Cosmog Chest and some fossil Pokémon chests at mining milestones.

As their descriptions say, the Fisherman Chest holds one of three Water Pokémon and the Bug Catcher Chest one of three Bug Pokémon. See hunting competitions and fishing.

Crafting, bosses and ladders

• Crafting: the lake trio boxes (Uxie Box, Mesprit Box and Azelf Box), the Regi chests, the Regidrago Chest, the Necrozma Chest and a Dratini Chest can be crafted. See crafting and Legendary Caverns.
• Ranked ladder: the monthly ladder rewards include legendary chests. See ranked PvP.
• Casino: the Make It Rain Chest from the Casino Token Store can hold a Bagon Chest, Dratini Chest, Snivy Chest, Oshawott Chest or Tepig Chest. See casino chests.
• Bosses and trainers:
  • The Hex Maniacs on Mt. Pyre 4F can give a Pupper Chest or a Gimmighoul Chest.
  • The Karate Master in Kanto’s Sacred Fist Sanctuary can give a Kubfu Chest.
  • The daily boss in Kanto’s Hollow Tree Zone can give a Bug Catcher Chest.
  • The Team Rocket bosses in Silph Co. can each give a Porygon Chest as one of their random rewards during the Kanto story.
