Diving and underwater treasure

Under Hoenn’s seas you will find underwater routes with their own Pokémon, five sunken Abandoned Ships you can raid once a day, and a quest line for the mayor of Pacifidlog Town. Separately, battling Pokémon while surfing can now and then drop you into a timed underwater den full of treasure.

You need HM09 (Dive) and at least 7 Hoenn badges. Steven gives you the HM in Steven’s House in Mossdeep City during the Hoenn story.

  1. Find a dive spot. Surf to a patch of deep, dark water.

  2. Interact with it. Press Space or tap it.

  3. Confirm Dive. The game asks whether you want to use Dive; say yes to go down.

Underwater you meet Pokémon such as Relicanth, Wiglett, Clamperl and Dondozo, and Divers you can battle. Each linked area has its full spawn list.

Once you have all 8 Hoenn badges, the mayor of Pacifidlog Town waits in his house, Pacifidlog Town House#4 on the map. Accepting his first request also makes the Ship Guards appear underwater, so this is where the Abandoned Ships begin.

The mayor of Pacifidlog Town starts the Abandoned Ship quests.

After each request you have to wait for the daily reset before he has the next one.

  1. Rescue the lost crew. Find the five crew members inside the Abandoned Ships on Route 107, Route 128 and Route 130, and on both floors of the Route 134 ship. Reward: 2,500 F and a Water Stone.

  2. Recover the lost cargo. Find the Food Supplies (Route 107 ship), the Medical Supplies (Route 134 ship, lower floor) and the Fishing Equipment (Route 124 ship). The Fishing Equipment is hidden, with nothing to see on the floor. It is in the top-right room of the Route 124 ship, against the top wall near the right side. Stand on the tile just below the spot and press the action button (or tap). Reward: 5,000 F and a Star Piece.

  3. Find the lost Notebook. The mayor’s son-in-law vanished at sea. His Lost Notebook is hidden in the Route 130 ship, which has the same layout. It is in the top-left room, against the top wall a little left of the middle. Stand next to the spot (on its left or just below it) and press the action button (or tap). Reward: 5,000 F and a Comet Shard.

With the notebook found, the missing fisherman Caprio comes home to Lilycove House #7. He offers you a Super Rod for 250,000 F once you are fishing level 50. You still need fishing level 60 to equip it, and the Master Fisherman sells the same rod for less; see Fishing.

Lilycove House #7Caprio's home in Lilycove City, once you have found his notebook.

Each of the five sunken ships has a Ship Guard outside it, underwater. Talk to him to go in.

  • You can enter each ship once a day, at any time of day. The guard tells you how long until you can go back.
  • You get 2 minutes inside. When time runs out you are teleported back outside.
  • Losing a battle inside also ends your visit.
  • The Route 107 and Route 124 ships each have a treasure chest you can open once per visit.

You get 2 minutes inside each Abandoned Ship per day.
Ship Where the Ship Guard is Inside

Abandoned Ship (Route 128) Route 128 (Underwater) Wild Pokémon and a crew member

Abandoned Ship BF and 1F (Route 134) Route 134 (Underwater Tunnel) Two floors: two crew members, the Medical Supplies and Pirate Jack

What the ships look like inside:

The Walking Wake and Gyarados bosses walk up and challenge you. Their level matches your highest-level Pokémon (level 50 at least), and you cannot use reviving items against them. You can fight them again on every visit.

Pirate Jack can be fought once a day. He brings one of five teams of six level 85 Pokémon and pays 1,000 F plus a random item when you win.

A ship’s treasure chest gives one random reward: Dome Fossil, Helix Fossil, Cover Fossil, Pearl, Nugget, Star Piece, Heart Scale, DeepSeaTooth, DeepSeaScale, Abyssal Pearlx1–3.

Abyssal Pearls are the currency for Finn’s shop. Wild Pokémon inside the Abandoned Ships can drop them (they drop nowhere else in the wild), and the ship treasure chests and Pirate Jack can give them too.

  2. Find the snorkel. Pick up the Untradable Snorkel in Route 126 (Underwater) and bring it back.

  3. Shop with Finn. Treasure Hunter Finn now opens his Abyssal Pearl Trader shop for you.

When you defeat a Pokémon you met while surfing, in any region, there is a very small chance that you “fall into an abandoned location”: one of three underwater dens. It can’t happen in Spring Valley or on seasonal event maps.

Den Boss
Wailord’s Den Wailord
Gyarados’s Den Gyarados
Sharpedo’s Den Mega Sharpedo

Like the ship bosses, a den boss matches the level of your highest-level Pokémon (level 50 at least), and you cannot use reviving items against it.

  • You have 2 minutes before you run out of oxygen and are sent back to where you were.
  • Air Bubbles add 60 seconds to the timer each. Use them from your Bag while you are in the den.
  • Wild Pokémon in a den pay out far more money than usual.
  • Every den has a Bronze chest and a Gold chest. A Silver chest appears after you defeat 20 wild Pokémon in the den.
  • Losing a battle ends your visit.

Each chest gives some money and a few items. A Bronze chest can hold up to 3 items, a Silver chest up to 2 and a Gold chest 1. The Gold chest in Sharpedo’s Den can also hold a Sharpedonite.
