IV items and the pity system
IVs are a Pokémon’s natural potential, from 0 to 31 in each stat (186 in total). In most Pokémon games they never change, but PBO has three items that change them. This page covers each item, the limits and the pity system that makes repeated IV Randomizers worth it.

For what IVs are, see Stats, IVs, EVs and natures.
The three IV items
Section titled “The three IV items”| Item | What it does | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Rolls six new IVs and lets you choose between the old and new set. | From your Bag, like a Revive: pick the Pokémon from your party. | |
| Adds 1 IV to one stat, up to 31. | From the IVs tab of the Pokémon’s card: select the stat, press +1 IV and confirm. It cannot be used from the Bag. | |
| Removes 1 IV from one stat, down to 0. Useful for a deliberately low stat such as 0 Speed. | Also from the IVs tab, not the Bag: select the stat, press -1 IV and confirm. |
IV Randomizer
Section titled “IV Randomizer”- Use it from your Bag. Find the IV Randomizer under medicine and use it.
- Choose a Pokémon. Pick a Pokémon from your party.
- Compare the rolls. The game shows the current IVs next to the new roll. Keep the old set or apply the new one.
The Randomizer is used up either way, and it counts towards the pity system even if you keep the old IVs.
If you apply the new IVs, the Pokémon’s IV Potion counter goes back to 0, so you can use its full allowance of IV Potions again. Potions already used are not refunded.

The game also protects good rolls:
- If the Pokémon already has near-perfect IVs and the new roll is worse, it asks you to confirm before overwriting them.
- If the new roll is near-perfect and better than what you have, it asks before you throw it away.
“Near-perfect” means close enough to 186 that the Pokémon’s full IV Potion allowance could finish the job.
The pity system
Section titled “The pity system”Every Pokémon remembers how many IV Randomizers have been used on it. The IVs tab shows it as “Randomizers used ×12”, for example. The more you have used, the higher the guaranteed minimum for every IV in each new roll:
| Randomizers already used on the Pokémon | Every IV in the next roll is at least |
|---|---|
| 0–9 | 0 |
| 10–19 | 5 |
| 20–29 | 10 |
| 30 or more | 15 |
| Shiny Pokémon, 0–39 | 15 |
| Shiny Pokémon, 40 or more | 20 |
The 11th Randomizer on a Pokémon is the first that cannot roll below 5, and the 31st is the first that cannot roll below 15. The count stays with the Pokémon, including through trades.
IV Potion limits
Section titled “IV Potion limits”Each Pokémon can only take a limited number of IV Potions. The limit depends on its rarity and is higher for shiny Pokémon. The IVs tab shows how many you have used and how many are allowed, for example “2 / 10”.
| Rarity | IV Potions allowed | Shiny |
|---|---|---|
| Common | 3 | 14 |
| Uncommon | 3 | 14 |
| Rare | 5 | 15 |
| Very Rare | 7 | 16 |
| Ultra Rare | 10 | 18 |
| Legendary | 12 | 20 |

Turning Pokémon into IV Potions
Section titled “Turning Pokémon into IV Potions”You can permanently release a Pokémon in exchange for IV Potions. Only these Pokémon qualify, and only if they are not holding an item:
| Pokémon | IV Potions |
|---|---|
| Legendary rarity | 3 |
| Ultra Rare rarity | 1 |
| Shiny (any rarity) | 1 |
There are two ways to do it:
Select the Pokémon in your PC storage and press Convert to IV Pots in the Selected Pokémon panel (Convert on small screens). You get the single best match, not a total: a shiny Legendary gives 3. The Extract IV Potion confirmation tells you how many potions you will receive.

Give the Pokémon from your party to one of the IV Scientists in Prof. Rowan’s Lab (Sandgem Town). Each of the three IV Scientists takes one kind: Ultra Rare, shiny or Legendary.
