Pokédex progress

Your Pokédex keeps two counts: the Pokémon you have seen and the ones you have caught. Several caves and battles only open once you have caught enough different Pokémon, and card styles and achievements reward the totals. This page explains what counts and lists everything a count unlocks.

How you meet the Pokémon Seen Caught
A wild battle, including hordes and co-op battles Yes —
Catching it, into your party or your PC Yes Yes
Evolving one of your Pokémon into it Yes Yes
A starter, an NPC gift or an NPC trade Yes Yes
Fusing two Pokémon into it Yes Yes
A trade with another player No No
Trainer, Gym and PvP battles No No

A Pokémon you get from another player only enters your Pokédex once you evolve it. In a co-op wild battle, every player in the battle sees the wild Pokémon.

Every form with its own Pokédex entry counts on its own: regional forms such as Alolan Vulpix, the Rotom forms, each Unown letter and the event forms. Catching an Alolan Vulpix doesn’t tick off Vulpix. Mega Evolution and other in-battle changes don’t add an entry.

  • Trainer Card: the Pokédex stat is your caught count and Seen is your seen count. The card shows Pokédex until you choose your own stats. See Trainer card.
  • Pokédex window: a Poké Ball next to a Pokémon means you have caught it. Under Filter Options, tick Show Caught Only? to list only those. See Pokédex.
  • In a wild battle: a small Poké Ball beside the wild Pokémon’s name means you have caught that Pokémon before.

  • Evolve what you catch. Every evolution adds a caught entry, so evolving is the cheapest way to raise your count.
  • Collect the gifts. Every gift Pokémon and NPC trade adds an entry.
  • Look for gaps. In the Pokédex, a Pokémon without a Poké Ball mark is one you haven’t caught yet. Its Locations tab says where it lives.
  • Mind the forms. Each form needs catching on its own. Several Alolan forms, for example, come from Kanto’s traders.
